Enclosure, Lissaniska, Co. Mayo

On a low rise in the improved pasture of Lissaniska, something circular once stood that is no longer quite visible.

What remains of this probable rath, a type of enclosed farmstead typically dating to early medieval Ireland and defined by an earthen bank and surrounding ditch, has been so thoroughly levelled that only faint undulations in the ground hint at its existence, and only if you know to look for them.

The enclosure first appears on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1838, drawn as a circular feature roughly 25 metres in diameter, sitting on a small peninsula that jutted into the southern end of Lough Crokery. It would have been a waterside position of some strategic and practical interest, with the lake offering both a natural boundary and a resource. By the time the six-inch edition of 1917 was produced, the picture had shifted considerably. Drainage works had caused the lake levels to recede, and what was once a lakeside peninsula had become simply a rise in a field, the water now some 80 to 100 metres to the north. The 25-inch plan and the 1917 edition together show only the western half of the enclosure, with a fosse (a surrounding ditch) and an external bank still discernible at that point. Sometime between the surveys and today, the earthwork was levelled entirely. The landscape has been quietly rearranged twice over, once by drainage, once by agriculture, and the rath has been caught in both transformations.

The site still commands good views in all directions, and Lough Crokery remains visible to the north-west, if no longer at the enclosure's edge. The slight undulations in the turf are the only physical record of something that the early mapmakers thought worth marking.
