It has never been excavated, never formally signposted, and cannot be seen from ground level. The only way to detect it at all is from the air, where it appears as a cropmark, a phenomenon that occurs when buried features such as walls, ditches, or filled pits affect how vegetation grows above them. In dry conditions especially, crops over compacted or stone-filled ground tend to ripen faster and show lighter, while those rooted above a moisture-retaining ditch grow taller and stay greener longer. From altitude, that differential growth traces the outline of whatever lies beneath, sometimes with remarkable clarity.

This particular enclosure came to attention through aerial photographs taken from Google Earth in November 2005. The circular cropmark it produced suggests a ringfort or similar enclosed settlement, a type of site that was common in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the sixth to the twelfth century, and built to define a family farmstead and provide a degree of security for people and livestock. At around 24 metres in diameter, this example falls at the smaller end of the scale for such enclosures, though without excavation it is impossible to say with confidence what it is or when it was built. The identification was made by Caimin O'Brien, working from details supplied by Jean-Charles Caillère, and the site was formally recorded in 2020.

What makes the Loughagar More enclosure quietly compelling is precisely its invisibility on the ground. There is no mound, no hollow, no visible bank. The landscape keeps the secret entirely, releasing it only under the specific conditions that allow cropmarks to form, and even then only to someone looking down from above. Thousands of similar sites across Ireland are likely still undetected, their geometry waiting for the right summer drought and the right satellite pass to give them away.
