Enclosure, Neworchard, Co. Kilkenny

Beneath the tarmac of Kilkenny's outer ring road lies the ghost of a circular enclosure that most drivers pass over without knowing it exists.

The monument at Neworchard is visible not as earthworks or stonework but as a cropmark, a phenomenon where buried ditches and banks affect the growth of surface crops or grass above them, producing faint variations in colour and height that become legible only from the air. What the aerial record captured here is a double ring, two concentric fosses, or ditches, enclosing a roughly circular area of about 35 metres in diameter, sitting in relatively flat ground on the southern approaches to Kilkenny City.

The enclosure came to light through an aerial photograph taken on 13 July 1989, referenced as GB89.Q.25, during a period when systematic aerial survey was revealing vast numbers of previously unrecorded archaeological sites across Ireland. Double-fossed circular enclosures of this kind are generally associated with the early medieval period, though without excavation the date and function of any individual example remain uncertain. What is certain is that by 2007, when the N77 outer ring road was completed, the line of the new road cut directly through the monument. The enclosure was not relocated or preserved in place; the road simply went through it, as roads sometimes do when the archaeological significance of a site is weighed against infrastructure needs, or when a site exists only as a cropmark and leaves no visible trace to prompt a rerouting.
