Enclosure, Parkstown, Co. Tipperary

On the summit of Carrigeen Hill in County Tipperary, there is an archaeological site that can no longer actually be seen.

What was once recorded as a small oval enclosure, the kind of bounded earthwork that might have served as a farmstead, a ritual space, or a place of shelter in early medieval Ireland, has effectively vanished from the surface of the ground. No bank, no ditch, no visible outline remains at ground level. The site survives, if that is the right word, only as a slight raising of the earth in a field.

The first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, produced in 1843, captured the enclosure clearly enough, showing it as a compact oval shape sitting at the hill's highest point. By the time the revised edition was surveyed in 1952 and 1953, only the north-western half of the site was still being indicated, suggesting that over the intervening century, agricultural activity, erosion, or simple neglect had steadily reduced what was once a legible earthwork to something far more ambiguous. Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien, who compiled the Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary, noted that a raised area in the field appears to mark where the enclosure once stood, though even that is a tentative reading of a landscape that has largely moved on.

There is something quietly instructive about a place like this. Ireland retains thousands of enclosures in various states of survival, from impressively upstanding ringforts to barely perceptible cropmarks, and many fall somewhere in the middle. Carrigeen Hill sits at the more elusive end of that spectrum. A visitor walking the ground today would find undulating Tipperary farmland and a hilltop with a modest elevation, and would need to look very carefully, and know exactly what they were looking for, to detect anything unusual at all.
