Enclosure, Scartana, Co. Tipperary

Between the first Ordnance Survey of 1840 and the revised edition of 1906, a circular earthwork in Scartana, County Tipperary, was quietly erased from the landscape.

The 1840 map recorded it clearly: a banked enclosure roughly 40 metres in diameter, with trees growing inside. By the time surveyors returned for the second edition, it was gone, levelled into the surrounding farmland at some point during those intervening decades.

Enclosures of this type, roughly circular earthen banks enclosing a defined interior space, are among the most common prehistoric and early medieval monument types in Ireland, yet individually they are easily lost. At Scartana, a modern field boundary running north to south now bisects the site, cutting straight through where the bank once curved. A second boundary runs northeast to southwest but appears to respect the old outline, perhaps preserving some folk memory of what lay beneath. On the western side, under tillage, a faint curving rise is still just readable in the ground: five metres wide, rising about 40 centimetres above the interior and less than 20 centimetres on the outer face. The eastern half, under grass, has left no visible trace at all. Another enclosure of similar type once stood roughly 250 metres to the south, which would have made this a paired or at least a neighbourly arrangement in the ancient landscape.

The landowner has noted that the corner of the tillage field where the monument once sat tends to throw up an unusual amount of stone. It is a small, practical clue that something once stood here, and that the ground has not entirely forgotten it.
