Enclosure, Skecoor, Co. Galway

In a field in Skecoor, Co. Galway, a low earthwork sits in undulating grassland above a stretch of marshy land to the east.

What makes it quietly peculiar is the double identity it has carried across two centuries of mapping: a fort that was also, or perhaps once surrounded, a place of Catholic worship. The two things do not obviously belong together, and the ground itself no longer explains the connection.

The 1838 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded the site as a roughly trapezoidal enclosure, labelled in Gothic script as a fort, with a note appended in Roman script reading "site of R.C. Chapel." The contrast in typefaces was deliberate OS practice, Gothic script being reserved for antiquities of Gaelic or pre-Norman origin, Roman script for features of a different or more recent character. By the time the more detailed 1:2500 plan was surveyed between 1912 and 1916, the chapel had been reduced to a "Site of" symbol placed within the enclosure's interior, suggesting that even then nothing stood above ground. On present inspection the enclosure measures roughly 18.5 metres north to south and 15.5 metres east to west. It is defined by two earthen banks with a fosse, or ditch, running between them, a form typical of early medieval enclosures found widely across Ireland. The outer bank has been lost along the northern side, and there is no visible surface trace whatsoever of the chapel inside. Two things have quietly vanished here, a building and whatever relationship it once had with the older earthwork around it.
