Enclosure, Uragh, Co. Kerry

On a rough hillside above the valley of Lough Inchiquin in south-west Kerry, a small circular enclosure sits in the kind of terrain that tends to swallow evidence of the past quietly and completely.

It measures just over six metres across, and what survives of its boundary is a collapsed drystone wall, the type of construction that requires no mortar, relying instead on the careful placement of stones to hold its shape. That wall has not held its shape, but enough remains, at roughly half a metre thick and still standing to about ninety centimetres in places, to trace the original circuit with reasonable confidence.

What makes this enclosure worth a second look is the way its builders worked with what the ground gave them. Outcroppings of natural rock were incorporated directly into the base of the wall rather than cleared away, which suggests a practical, opportunistic approach to construction rather than a wholesale imposition of form onto the landscape. A narrow entrance, just sixty centimetres wide, opens to the west. Enclosures of this kind, found across Ireland in upland and marginal ground, are sometimes associated with early medieval settlement or with livestock management, though without excavation it is rarely possible to say with certainty what a particular example was for or when exactly it was built. The sheltered position here, tucked against a north-east facing slope that rises steeply to the south and west, is characteristic of sites chosen with an eye to protection from prevailing weather.
