Eyreville, Kiltormer, Co. Galway

A roofless tower on high ground north of Kiltormer village might, at a distance, be mistaken for a fragment of a castle.

It is not. The tapering rubble walls, pierced by a narrow slit window near the top and by two doorways that have been widened and reshaped over the years, belong to a windmill, one of a small scattering of circular-plan examples that once worked the fields of South Galway. Without its cap, sails or machinery, only the stone shell survives, but its position on elevated ground was clearly chosen so that it would catch the wind and, perhaps just as usefully, catch the eye.

The windmill was built around 1780 within the demesne lands of Eyreville, at a time when landed estates across Ireland were investing in the infrastructure needed to process the grain grown on their farms. Circular stone towers like this one housed rotating sails connected to internal machinery that ground corn into flour, a technology that had been used in Ireland for centuries but which saw a particular flourishing on estate lands in the eighteenth century as improving landlords sought to make their properties more self-sufficient and profitable. The rubble limestone construction, roughly coursed rather than finely dressed, suggests a building put up for function rather than show, though its silhouette on rising ground made it a landmark all the same. The two door openings, on the east and west sides, have been enlarged and altered from their original form, evidence of later reuse or adaptation after the mill itself fell out of operation.

Today the building stands empty of roof and machinery, its interior open to the sky, but the walls remain substantial enough to convey the scale of the original structure. It survives as one of several such windmills scattered across County Galway, a reminder that the county's agricultural past included a phase of mechanised grain processing now largely forgotten outside the stonework left behind.
