Field system, Newpark, Co. Kilkenny

On the north-eastern outskirts of Kilkenny City, a stretch of tillage ground holds the faint traces of a field system old enough to predate the roads, the city's expansion, and quite possibly the town itself.

The system is not visible to the eye from the ground in any obvious way; what revealed it was an aerial photograph taken on 13 July 1989, in which a series of fosses, that is, ditches used to mark out boundaries, delineate a rectilinear pattern of fields oriented roughly north-north-east to south-south-west. The visible length runs to approximately 280 metres, with individual field widths of around 50 metres between boundaries. An integral trackway runs through the system, suggesting this was not simply farmed land but an organised, interconnected landscape.

Within the field system lie two probable plough-levelled barrows, the low circular earthen mounds associated with prehistoric burial, though the relationship between the burials and the field boundaries is uncertain; they may belong to entirely different periods. A river running southward toward the Nore flows roughly parallel to the eastern edge of the system, which may have influenced how the land was originally laid out. The more recent interruption to the landscape is easier to date precisely: the outer ring road completed in 2007 cuts directly through the field system on a north-north-west to south-south-east line, severing what had survived largely intact beneath the cultivated soil for an unknown stretch of centuries. Some portion of the original boundary pattern remained legible enough that, in satellite imagery captured on 13 August 2015, at least one field boundary is still visible as a cropmark, the faint differential in how crops grow over buried features beneath them, a signature in the vegetation of something no longer standing above ground.
