Pigeon House, Creevard, Co. Mayo

Estate Features
In the townland of Creevard in County Mayo, there stands a structure of a kind that once dotted the Irish countryside in considerable numbers but has since become genuinely scarce: a pigeon house, also known as a dovecote, built to house and breed domestic pigeons that supplied fresh meat and eggs to a household through the lean months of winter.
At a time when preserving food was difficult and fresh protein in short supply, a well-stocked dovecote was a practical asset rather than an ornamental one, and ownership of one was typically tied to a degree of social standing, since the birds required grain to feed them, grain that often came from a tenant's fields.
