Flour Mills, Baurstookeen, Co. Tipperary

On the eastern bank of the River Suir, just north of the village of Golden in County Tipperary, there was once a working flour mill complete with its own mill race and mill pond.

The mill race, a channel engineered to divert and control the flow of water to drive the millwheel, is the kind of infrastructure that takes considerable investment to build, which makes the mill's relatively brief working life all the more notable. By the time the Ordnance Survey mapped the area again in 1903 to 1904, the complex was already marked as disused, and the physical structure itself was demolished sometime in the middle of the twentieth century. Nothing now marks the site as a former centre of milling activity.

The first reliable cartographic evidence for the mill appears on the 1840 edition of the six-inch Ordnance Survey map, where it is labelled 'Flour Mills' alongside the associated pond. There is no evidence to suggest the mill predates the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, placing its origins in a period when rural milling was expanding rapidly across Ireland, driven by improvements in millwright technology and growing demand for processed grain. The mill sat in Baurstookeen, a townland beside the River Suir in the fertile Golden Vale, a landscape well suited to cereal cultivation. Its working life, from sometime around the turn of the nineteenth century to its abandonment before 1903, amounts to perhaps a century at most, possibly considerably less.
