At Rattoo in north Kerry, a fragment of medieval religious life sits quietly on a window ledge, detached from the structure that once gave it purpose.
An octagonal stone font basin, its underside trimmed with a chamfer, the angled cut that would have eased its transition to a supporting column, now rests on the sill of the south window of the medieval church there. The column and base on which it once stood have vanished entirely, leaving only this upper section, repositioned rather than discarded.
A baptismal font of this kind would originally have comprised three parts: the basin itself, a central column, and a base. The octagonal form was a deliberate choice in medieval ecclesiastical design, the eight sides carrying symbolic weight, with the number eight associated with resurrection and the renewal of baptism. That this basin survived at all, while its supporting elements did not, is a reminder of how unevenly the past comes down to us. The church at Rattoo is itself a medieval structure, part of a site that includes a well-preserved round tower, one of the few remaining in Kerry, suggesting a monastic settlement of some significance in the area.
