Fort, Corraleehanbeg, Co. Cavan

In the townland of Corraleehanbeg in County Cavan, a circular rise in the ground marks the outline of an ancient enclosure that most people walking past would take for a natural feature.

It is a ringfort, or rather what remains of one: a raised interior platform roughly thirty metres across, ringed by an earthen bank that has been worn down considerably over the centuries, with the faint depression of a fosse, a defensive ditch, still just about legible on the ground beside it. A ringfort was typically a farmstead of the early medieval period, its bank and ditch less about military defence and more about enclosing a household, keeping livestock in and wolves or rivals out. This one has survived in outline, though only just.

The most readable detail the site retains is a gap in the bank on the north-east side, which represents the original entrance. Entrances on the north-east or east were common in ringfort construction, possibly for practical or ceremonial reasons, and the fact that this one can still be identified suggests the earthwork has not been entirely lost to ploughing or land improvement. In 1988 the interior was planted with coniferous trees, a fate that befell a great many such sites across Ireland during the decades when commercial forestry was encouraged on marginal land. The planting has likely altered the ground surface and may obscure some of the subtle topography that would otherwise help a visitor read the shape of the place.
