Fulacht fia, Aughrim, Co. Cork

In a pasture field near Aughrim in north Cork, about twenty metres north-east of a local well, lies a prehistoric cooking site that has left no mark on the surface whatsoever.

It is entirely invisible. What gave it away was burnt material found by people who knew the land, a trace of fire that pointed to something much older beneath the grass.

A fulacht fia is a type of ancient outdoor cooking place found in large numbers across Ireland, typically dating from the Bronze Age. The usual form involves a trough dug into the ground, a mound of fire-cracked stones heaped beside it, and evidence of water being boiled by dropping heated stones into the pit. They are often found near water sources, which makes the proximity of the well here a detail worth noting rather than coincidence. At Aughrim, the burnt material recorded from local knowledge fits the profile, though without excavation the full picture remains underground. The site carries no visible mound, no hollow, nothing to catch the eye of a passing walker.
