Fulacht fia, Bawnatemple, Co. Cork

Beneath a tilled field south of a stream in Bawnatemple, County Cork, lies a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in great numbers across Ireland.

By the time an Ordnance Survey team mapped the area in 1938, it was recorded as a mound, a low grassy rise that would have hinted at something older underneath. Today, even that much is gone; decades of ploughing have erased any surface trace entirely.

Fulachtaí fia, the plural form, are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, and yet they remain somewhat mysterious. The general theory holds that they functioned as outdoor cooking sites, probably during the Bronze Age, where water was boiled by dropping fire-heated stones into a trough. The broken, heat-shattered stones piled up over time into a horseshoe-shaped mound, which is what surveyors and farmers have been stumbling across for centuries. The Bawnatemple example is not alone in its field, either literally or figuratively. A second fulacht fia has been recorded immediately adjacent to it, which is not unusual; these sites often cluster near water sources, and the stream running nearby would have been essential to the whole process.

What makes this particular site quietly interesting is precisely its invisibility. The 1938 map preserves a moment when the mound was still legible in the landscape, a small topographical fact that farming has since smoothed away. The archaeology itself survives underground, in theory at least, waiting in the tillage soil.
