To an untrained eye it might look like nothing more than a patch of disturbed ground, but the arrangement is the signature of a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland. The general principle involves heating stones in a fire, dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil, and repeating the process until whatever was being cooked, whether meat or something else entirely, was done. The stones crack and shatter with the repeated thermal shock, and over time a mound of heat-spent fragments accumulates. These sites are among the most commonly recorded prehistoric monuments in the country, yet each one carries its own quiet puzzle.

What makes the Coolnakilly example slightly unusual is the absence of any obvious water source nearby. Most fulachtaí fia are found close to streams, rivers, or boggy ground, since the whole process depends on a ready supply of water. Here, none is immediately visible, which raises the question of whether a source has since dried up, shifted course, or simply escaped notice during survey. The burnt stone itself is a mixture of fine gravel sandstone, with some small quartz pieces scattered through it and traces of charcoal, though the charcoal is not particularly concentrated. A second spread of burnt stone lies about two hundred metres to the west, suggesting this part of Coolnakilly saw repeated or prolonged activity at some point in prehistory, even if the precise period remains unspecified in what has been recorded.
