The spread measures roughly six metres long and four metres wide, the compacted residue of a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking or processing site found in extraordinary numbers across Ireland. The characteristic mound, when visible, is formed almost entirely of fire-cracked stone, blackened and split by repeated heating and rapid cooling in water-filled troughs.

What makes this particular site quietly remarkable is not any feature of the fulacht fia itself but its company. It is one of five such sites recorded within the same field, a concentration that suggests this low-lying, probably once-boggy ground was returned to repeatedly over time, perhaps by seasonal hunting parties, perhaps for other purposes, animal hide processing and textile production among the theories that have accumulated around these enigmatic monuments. Fulachta fiadh are generally assigned to the Bronze Age, with the majority of dated examples falling between roughly 1500 and 500 BC, though some are earlier. The clustering of five within a single field at Killinardrish is the kind of detail that tends to get lost in the broader landscape but points to sustained, deliberate activity on a specific patch of ground over a long period.
