Giant’s Grave, Caheraphuca, Co. Clare

The name alone signals something older than the county it sits in.

In the townland of Caheraphuca in County Clare, a megalithic structure known locally as the Giant's Grave has been folded into the landscape long enough that the ground itself seems to have accepted it. It is a wedge tomb, a type of prehistoric burial monument common across the west of Ireland, typically consisting of a long, narrowing stone gallery, wider and taller at one end, roofed with large capstones, and originally covered by a cairn of smaller stones. These structures belong broadly to the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age, built by communities for whom the boundary between the living and the dead was managed with considerable architectural effort.

The tomb at Caheraphuca was documented by Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin as part of their systematic Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, the first volume of which covered County Clare and was published in 1961. That survey remains a foundational work in Irish prehistoric archaeology, cataloguing the distribution and condition of monuments that had until then been recorded only patchily. Wedge tombs are the most numerous megalithic tomb type in Ireland, and Clare has a particularly dense concentration of them, suggesting the region was actively settled and ceremonially organised during prehistory. The site has since been designated a national monument in state care, a status that offers it legal protection under Irish heritage legislation.
