Graveslab, Cashel, Co. Tipperary

In the upper masonry of a graveyard wall in Cashel, a small piece of medieval stonework has been quietly recycled into the fabric of a boundary rather than preserved behind glass or noted with a plaque.

The fragment, a piece of sandstone measuring roughly 35 by 22 centimetres, is set into the internal face of the north-west wall of St. John's graveyard, towards the western end. It carries a single curving incised line, the remnant of what was once a decorated medieval graveslab, the kind of carved funerary marker that would originally have lain flat over a grave or been set upright as a memorial. That this scrap survived at all is partly luck and partly common practice: when old stonework was cleared, repaired, or reorganised over the centuries, fragments were often pressed into service as convenient building material.

The graveyard encloses St. John's Church of Ireland Cathedral, which itself stands on the site of a medieval church. Cashel, of course, already carries considerable weight as a place of early Christian and medieval significance, dominated by the famous Rock a short distance away. St. John's sits in the lower town, somewhat in the shadow of that more celebrated site, and the cathedral and its grounds have their own layered history. The graveslab fragment, modest as it is, represents a physical connection to the medieval burial ground that preceded the current arrangements on this site. The incised curve on its face is all that remains of what might once have been a cross, a geometric pattern, or a more elaborate decorative scheme; without more of the stone, it is impossible to say.
