Graveslab, Portlecka, Co. Clare

In the south-west corner of Ruan church in County Clare, propped upright against the south wall rather than lying flat as it once would have done, sits a fragment of a medieval graveslab.

It is not a grand monument. Measuring just under a metre in length, with only part of its width visible above ground level, it is the kind of object that rewards a second look rather than announcing itself immediately. What it has to offer is quiet and worn: a raised Latin cross, carved in relief on the east-facing side, now so abraded by time that it takes a moment to resolve out of the stone's surface.
