Look closely at the south-western corner of the enclosure and you will notice the earth bank curves outward in a gentle arc, a detail that seems unremarkable until you understand what it suggests: the original boundary here was not square but rounded, following the form of an early ecclesiastical enclosure. That curving bank, just under a metre high and a little over two metres wide, is almost certainly older than anything inscribed in stone within the site.

Early Christian burial grounds in Ireland were frequently circular or oval in plan, their curved perimeters marking out sacred space in a tradition that predates the formal parish system by centuries. The graveyard at Tobertown preserves traces of exactly this kind of layout, even as the rest of the enclosure has settled into a roughly square form. The site was recorded and compiled by Geraldine Stout and updated by Christine Baker, with notes uploaded in October 2014. The graveyard occupies an elevated position along the roadside to the west of the village, and it slopes gently downward from north to south. Most of the gravestones visible today date from the nineteenth century into the modern period, with only occasional examples from the eighteenth century, but the buried topography speaks to a much earlier use of the land for religious purposes.

The graveyard is accessible via a laneway to the east, with farmland lying to the north and west, and the road forming the southern boundary, where a low internal bank drops steeply toward the road and adjoining house. The entrance is at the south-east, where the curved perimeter is most visible. It is worth walking the inner edge of the boundary bank rather than heading straight for the gravestones; the subtle change in alignment at the south-western corner, where the straight line gives way to a curve, is the detail that carries the most historical weight here.
