Holy well, Ardnamoher, Co. Limerick

A holy well that is usually dry and no longer visited is an unusual thing to catalogue, yet that is precisely what this one in Ardnamoher, County Limerick, amounts to.

It sits on the west side of the road, close to the ruins of Moor Abbey, and by most accounts it holds no water. Whatever devotional life it once sustained has quietly wound down, leaving behind little more than a name on a map and a few recollections gathered before those who remembered were gone.

The folklorist Caoimhín Ó Danachair recorded its details in 1955, noting that the well appeared on the Ordnance Survey map of 1840 as St Francis Well, a dedication that almost certainly reflects the proximity of Moor Abbey, a Franciscan friary whose ruins still stand nearby. Holy wells in Ireland were typically sites of pattern days, annual gatherings combining prayer, offerings, and social occasion, and this one followed recognisable custom: people left rags or small strips of cloth tied to the surrounding bushes as votive offerings, a practice found across the country and understood as a way of leaving illness or misfortune behind. The specific cure associated with the well was for sore eyes, a common attribution at sites with a reputation for healing water. By the time Ó Danachair was writing, the organised devotions had already ceased, though he noted that visits had been made within living memory, which places the end of active use somewhere in the first half of the twentieth century.

The well lies in the townland of Ardnamoher, and its most useful landmark remains Moor Abbey, the Franciscan friary founded in the thirteenth century whose roofless remains are the most visible feature of the area. The well itself, on the west side of the road, is easily overlooked, not least because it generally contains no water. Anyone curious enough to look for it should expect a site with no signage, no infrastructure, and no obvious markers of its former use. The bushes that once held the rags of those seeking cures are simply bushes now.
