Holy well, Shangarry, Co. Limerick

A holy well sitting inside a ringfort is unusual enough, but what makes this one in Shangarry, County Limerick particularly striking is the local legend attached to it: Saint Brighid herself is said to have converted a pagan chieftain who was living within the fort, and to have caused the well to spring up on the spot for his baptism.

The well does not merely occupy the same ground as the ancient enclosure by coincidence. According to that tradition, the two things are bound together, the conversion and the water, in a single founding moment.

The well sits in the north-east quadrant of the ringfort recorded as LI036-06001. A ringfort, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a circular enclosure, typically of early medieval date, formed by an earthen bank or stone wall and used as a defended farmstead or settlement. The well head itself is enclosed by a circular modern stone wall just over a metre in diameter, with an outflow on the east side, and a concrete statue of Saint Brighid stands beside it. The folklorist Caoimhín Ó Danachair, writing in 1955, noted that rounds were made at the well on the 1st of February, which is Saint Brighid's feast day and also the old festival of Imbolc marking the beginning of spring. He recorded that a pattern, the Irish term for a devotional gathering at a sacred site, was formerly held on that day, though this practice appears to have lapsed.

The well is set within an enclosed landscaped area, which makes it more accessible and visually tidier than many rural holy wells, though it also gives it a somewhat managed feel. The 1st of February remains the date most directly associated with the site, given its connection to the saint's feast. The statue of Brighid, though modern and in concrete, provides an immediate focal point, and the small stone enclosure around the well head is worth examining closely, particularly the outflow channel on the eastern side. The surrounding ringfort earthworks give useful context, a reminder that this patch of Limerick farmland has been in continuous use, in one form or another, for well over a thousand years.
