Hut site, An Baile Mór, Co. Donegal

On the summit of Slieve League, near the western edge of the mountain ridge, lies a fascinating collection of ancient religious structures that speak to centuries of pilgrimage and penance.

This particular hut site is one of three similar structures found amongst an impressive cluster of 26 penitential cairns, all located roughly 60 metres west of Hugh Mac Brick's Church. The entire complex overlooks the valley below, offering both spiritual isolation and commanding views that would have been meaningful to medieval pilgrims.

The hut itself is a modest circular structure, with only the lower courses of its drystone walls still standing about a metre high. The walls, measuring 0.8 metres thick, enclose a small interior space of approximately 1.6 by 1.2 metres; barely enough room for a single person to shelter or pray. What appears to have been a doorway facing west has since collapsed, though its position suggests deliberate orientation, possibly aligned with sunset or simply providing shelter from prevailing easterly winds.

These simple stone shelters, known locally as hut sites, were likely used by pilgrims undertaking arduous journeys to this sacred mountain summit. The proximity to both the church and the penitential cairns suggests this was part of a larger religious landscape where the faithful would perform acts of devotion, perhaps walking circuits around the cairns whilst praying, before taking shelter in these basic structures. The site was documented by Caimin O'Brien in July 2010 and remains an evocative reminder of Ireland's deep tradition of mountain pilgrimage.
