On the Dingle Peninsula, two ancient stone huts have been quietly absorbed into a working sheep-fold, their prehistoric geometry now sharing walls with the practical needs of a modern farm.

The arrangement is oddly companionable: a pair of conjoined circular structures built in the corbelled drystone tradition, meaning their walls were constructed without mortar, each course of stone projecting slightly inward over the one below to form a beehive-like vault, have become so entangled with the sheep-fold complex that the original forms are only partly legible. The exterior doorway on the east side of the south-western hut is now blocked, and some of the fabric has been lost, but enough survives to give a clear sense of what was once here.

The two huts communicate with each other through a lintelled passage, a narrow throat of stone just 45 centimetres wide and 73 centimetres high, and 1.5 metres long, which would have required anyone passing between them to crouch considerably. The exterior doorway, before it was blocked, measured 82 centimetres wide and 72 centimetres high, suggesting the people who used these structures were accustomed to moving through the world at a low stoop. Each hut retains a single small niche set into its wall, the kind of recess that might have held a lamp, a vessel, or some small object of daily significance. The huts measure 3.5 and at least 3.8 metres in diameter, with walls between 1.1 and 1.3 metres thick and a surviving height of 1.55 metres. These dimensions were recorded and published by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, a substantial inventory of the extraordinary concentration of early remains in this part of County Kerry.
