Hut site, Erneen, Co. Kerry

At roughly 2.2 metres in diameter, the circular hut site at Erneen in south-west Kerry is barely large enough to shelter a single person lying down.

That smallness is part of what makes it worth pausing over. The collapsed drystone wall, its stones now partly swallowed by grass, still rises to around 0.6 metres and retains a width of 0.8 metres, substantial enough to suggest the original structure had some solidity to it. Drystone construction, stone laid without mortar and held together by weight and careful placement, was a technique used across many centuries in Ireland, making it difficult to date a site like this from its fabric alone.

What gives the Erneen site additional interest is its setting within a relict field system, a network of old boundary walls that have long since fallen out of agricultural use. The hut does not sit in isolation; a surviving wall of that field system abuts it to the north, and at that same northern side, outcropping rock provides a natural shelter. Whether the hut was a dwelling, a temporary refuge for someone working the surrounding land, or a structure serving some other purpose, the relationship between it and the field system suggests it belonged to a working landscape, organised and inhabited, rather than being a solitary or ceremonial feature. The largest stones are visible in the lower courses of the collapsed wall, which is typical of drystone structures as they deteriorate, the heavier foundation stones holding their position while upper courses shift and spread outward over time.
