Hut site, Fán, Co. Kerry

On the south-eastern slopes of Mount Eagle in Co. Kerry, two small stone huts sit joined together on rough mountain ground, their walls still standing to a metre and a half despite the long centuries of wind and weather that have worked against them.

These are clochán, the drystone corbelled or dry-walled structures associated with early monastic and rural life along the Dingle Peninsula, built without mortar by fitting stone against stone until the structure holds itself through weight and geometry alone. What makes this particular pair quietly odd is the evidence of repurposing: the northern hut, circular in plan and roughly four metres across, was at some point divided internally by a cross-wall, apparently to convert it into a turf store. Someone, at some unknown date, looked at an ancient dwelling and decided it made a practical place to keep fuel dry.

R. A. S. Macalister noted the site in 1899, recording that the two huts appeared to be enclosed by a barely traceable enclosing wall. That outer boundary has since disappeared entirely, leaving the huts as isolated forms against the hillside. The southern hut is smaller and oval rather than circular, measuring roughly three by 2.3 metres, and contains an unusual feature: a small wedge-shaped chamber built into the thickness of its southern wall, just 1.5 metres long, less than a metre wide, and only about 45 centimetres high. Its purpose is not recorded. To the east of the northern hut there are traces of a third structure whose function remains unclear, and a little further south a large collapse of stone may represent yet another hut that has simply fallen in on itself over time. The local name, Clochán Cábún, attaches the generic word for this type of stone hut settlement to the specific place, rooting it firmly in the landscape's own vocabulary.
