Hut site, Kilnamanagh More, Co. Wicklow

Inside a ringfort in the Wicklow uplands, set close to the western bank of the enclosure, there is a hollow in the ground that was once someone's home.

It measures seven metres by four, sunken between one and one and a half metres into the earth, with a low earthen bank still visible along its south-eastern edge. That combination, a rectangular foundation dug into a south-facing slope, sheltered within an already-enclosed space, gives a precise and somewhat intimate sense of how a person or family might have arranged their world against the Wicklow weather.

Ringforts, roughly circular enclosures defined by earthen banks and ditches, are among the most common monument types in Ireland, with many dating to the early medieval period, broadly the sixth to tenth centuries. They typically served as enclosed farmsteads, and it was not unusual for a dwelling to be positioned inside one, using the fort's own bank as additional shelter. Here, the hut sits very close to the western bank of the ringfort recorded separately at this site, on a gentle south-facing slope that would have caught what light and warmth the terrain allowed. The position is not entirely comfortable in other respects: the slope that the hut looks out over is itself overlooked by steeper ground, which would have made this a somewhat exposed and watchful location despite the enclosure around it.
