Hut site, Teeromoyle, Co. Kerry

On the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, a low circular hollow in the ground marks the remains of a stone hut that once sheltered a person or perhaps a small group, though exactly when and for what purpose remains unrecorded.

It is a modest survival: roughly circular, with a diameter of around 4.8 metres, its walls surviving to no more than half a metre in height and less than a metre thick. What keeps it legible as a structure at all are the low upright stones used to revet it, that is, to line and stabilise the inner face of the wall, a technique common in early medieval and earlier Irish construction where drystone walling was built against an earthen bank to give it form and coherence.

The Iveragh Peninsula, home to the Ring of Kerry and a landscape unusually dense with early remains, has yielded hundreds of such sites through systematic survey. This hut at Teeromoyle is one among many catalogued across the peninsula, where the combination of relatively dry upland ground, thin soils, and sparse later development has allowed fragile earthworks to survive that would long since have been ploughed or built over elsewhere. Circular huts of this kind could belong to almost any period from the Bronze Age onward, and without excavation their date is difficult to establish with confidence. They may have served as shelters for seasonal farming activity, as booley huts used during the summer transhumance of cattle to upland pastures, or as more permanent small dwellings. The Teeromoyle example, at under five metres across, is on the smaller end of the scale, suggesting a simple, single-purpose shelter rather than a domestic homestead.
