Kerb circle, Coumaraglinmountain, Co. Waterford

On the upper slopes of Coumaraglinmountain in County Waterford, a cluster of prehistoric stone monuments sits quietly in a landscape that most people never pass through. What makes this particular site unusual is not just the presence of a kerb circle, a low ring of stones typically thought to have enclosed a burial mound or marked a ceremonially significant area, but the fact that it physically intertwines with a second kerb circle immediately to its north-west. Two monuments, each a distinct structure, overlapping or touching in a way that suggests either deliberate alignment or a long sequence of use and reuse across prehistoric time.

The circle itself consists of fourteen stones, measuring roughly 4.55 metres east to west and 4.35 metres north to south, making it a compact but clearly intentional arrangement. It sits on a gentle west-facing slope of the broad Araglin river valley, about 150 metres east of the stream that runs along the valley floor. The orientation is notable: the circle is open to the north-east, a feature sometimes associated with prehistoric monuments that were laid out with reference to the movements of the sun or moon. A third kerb circle lies approximately 40 metres to the north-east, suggesting this stretch of upland was a focus for monument-building activity over an extended period rather than a single isolated act of construction.

The Araglin valley runs roughly north-east to south-west through some of the quieter hill country of west Waterford, and the upper reaches around Coumaraglinmountain remain sparsely visited. The grouping of monuments here, with their interlocking geometry and shared orientation, rewards careful attention on the ground, though the individual stones are low and the arrangement easier to read from slightly uphill than from within the circle itself.
