Kilcredaun Battery, Kilcredaun, Co. Clare

Kilcredaun Battery keeps that arrangement, seven bays wide, single storey over a basement, built low and solid against the weather coming off the Shannon estuary. The base of the walls flares outward slightly, a batter that helped the structure shed cannon fire and settle its own weight into the ground, while cut-stone quoins mark the corners and a matching cut-stone parapet runs along the top.

The tower carries the date 1814 on the keystone above its door, placing it firmly within the wave of coastal fortification built during the Napoleonic Wars, when the British authorities were bracing for a French invasion that might come up the Shannon toward Limerick. Structures like this one were part of a chain meant to watch the estuary and respond quickly if hostile ships appeared; the segmental blind arch over the entrance, with its voussoirs, the wedge-shaped stones that lock an arch together, was built to house a drawbridge spanning the moat, a defensive detail more commonly associated with medieval castles than with buildings of the early nineteenth century. The moat itself survives, lined in rubble stone, though the mechanism it once protected is long gone. Long after its military purpose lapsed, the building found a second life; there is a record of it possibly serving as a hall sometime between the 1940s and 1950s, a modest reuse for a structure that no army ever had to defend in earnest. Today it stands disused, its limestone walls and square-headed window openings with their cut-stone lintels largely intact, a quiet holdover from a period when this stretch of coast was treated as a genuine point of vulnerability.
