Kilns
A hollow in a wet Limerick field does not announce itself as anything in particular, but the horseshoe-shaped depression in the pasture near Feohanagh is the remains of a lime kiln, a structure that once played a quietly essential role in the agricultural economy of the Irish countryside.
Lime kilns were used to burn limestone at high temperatures, producing quicklime that farmers spread on acidic soils to improve their fertility. Thousands were built across Ireland, most of them modest, functional, and now largely forgotten beneath grass and rush.
This particular example sits on the north-eastern side of a natural ridge that runs roughly north-west to south-east, with the open face of the depression oriented towards the valley below. The choice of location was deliberate. Kilns were typically positioned on a slope so that fuel and raw limestone could be loaded from the higher side while the processed lime was drawn from the base, making the work of loading and emptying considerably easier. The depression measures approximately ten metres north to south and eleven metres east to west, with a maximum depth of around 1.4 metres. A small right-angled section of stonework, roughly one metre by 0.4 metres and about 0.4 metres thick, still protrudes from the crest of the ridge to the west of the hollow. It is one of the few legible fragments of what was once a working structure. The site was recorded by Denis Power and uploaded to the national record in August 2011.
The kiln sits within gently undulating wet pasture, which means the ground underfoot is likely to be soft for much of the year, and sensible footwear is advisable. The stonework is modest, easily missed without some prior knowledge of what to look for. The horseshoe form of the depression is the clearest indicator of what the site once was, and standing at its open end and looking back up towards the ridge gives some sense of how the structure would have functioned within the landscape. There are no formal facilities or signage at the site.
