Kilnahard House, Kilnahard, Co. Cavan

Square-plan turrets rising above a two-storey house are the sort of detail that belongs on a much larger structure, a fortified tower house or a border castle built to withstand attack.

At Kilnahard House they sit instead on a country residence, a piece of architectural theatre from an age when Ireland's landed gentry wanted their homes to look like strongholds without any of the inconvenience of actually defending them.

The house was built around 1820, during a period when castellation, the addition of battlements, turrets, and other defensive-looking features to buildings that had no real military purpose, had become a fashionable statement across the Irish and British countryside. Architects and their patrons drew on medieval forms not out of necessity but out of a taste for the picturesque and the romantic, a reaction against the plainer classical facades that had dominated the previous century. Kilnahard House, detached and multiple-bay in plan, reflects that fashion clearly: its turrets and castellated detailing are decorative rather than functional, a nod to an imagined past rather than a response to any genuine threat. The house does not stand alone in making this impression. A range of outbuildings to the west and rubble stone boundary walls surrounding the property extend the sense of a complete estate setting, giving the main house a context that reinforces its architectural character rather than simply framing it.
