Burial Grounds

Knockaunnamban Grave Yard, Cartoorbeg, Co. Galway

On a small grassy hill above the northern shore of Omey Island in Connemara, there is a burial ground that local tradition held to be reserved exclusively for women.

The Irish name, Cnocán na mBan, translates straightforwardly as the little hill of the women, and while the reasons for that designation have not survived in any written record, the name alone is enough to suggest that this was no ordinary graveyard. The enclosure is roughly circular, about thirty metres across, defined by an earthen bank that has worn down considerably over time. At the southern arc, traces of an external stone revetment, the facing stones that would once have lined the outer edge of the bank, are still faintly visible.

The site attracted scholarly attention as far back as the late nineteenth century, when W. F. Wakeman noted a carved cross-slab associated with the island in 1891, with further reference by H. S. Crawford in 1913. That stone, classified and catalogued but now lost, has since been traced back to this particular graveyard through Office of Public Works files, a small archival correction that quietly shifts our understanding of where early Christian material from Omey Island actually originated. Omey itself is a tidal island, reachable on foot across the strand at low tide, and it carries a strong early medieval Christian heritage. The presence of a cross-slab here, even one no longer extant, places Cnocán na mBan within that broader landscape of early ecclesiastical activity along this stretch of the Connemara coast.

Omey Island is accessed from Claddaghduff when the tide allows, and the crossing is well known locally. The graveyard sits on the summit of the hill overlooking the northern shore, which makes it relatively easy to locate once on the island. The earthen bank is degraded enough that a casual visitor might not immediately read the enclosure as an enclosure at all, but the slight rise and curve of the ground become clearer once you are looking for them.
