Megalithic tomb – portal tomb, Glencloghlea, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Glencloghlea in County Kilkenny, there is a portal tomb, one of the most visually arresting forms of prehistoric monument found in Ireland.

Portal tombs, sometimes called dolmens, are megalithic structures typically consisting of two tall upright portal stones at the entrance, a backstone, and a large capstone that tilts dramatically upward toward the front. They were built during the Neolithic period, roughly five to seven thousand years ago, and are understood to have served as communal burial monuments, though their precise ritual significance remains a matter of ongoing study. That one survives in Glencloghlea is itself quietly remarkable; Kilkenny is not a county immediately associated with megalithic tombs in the popular imagination, which tends to fix on the great concentrations found in Clare, Mayo, or the Boyne Valley.

Beyond its classification and location, the documentary record for this particular monument is thin. No specific excavation reports, recorded finds, or historical accounts tied to this site are currently available in the public domain, which places Glencloghlea in a category shared by a number of Irish megalithic sites: known, mapped, and protected, but not yet fully described. What can be said is that the townland name itself, with its suggestion of a glen and the Irish word cloch, meaning stone, hints at a landscape long shaped by the presence of rock, and that whoever raised this tomb chose their ground deliberately, as Neolithic builders consistently did, with an eye to topography, visibility, and perhaps the movement of light across the land.
