Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, An Mhín Aird Thiar, Co. Kerry

On the south-eastern flank of a mountain ridge above Minard Bay on the Dingle Peninsula, a small prehistoric tomb sits on gently sloping ground, largely overlooked by the walkers and tourists who pass through this part of west Kerry.

It is a wedge tomb, a type of megalithic monument built during the late Neolithic and into the Bronze Age, characterised by a gallery that narrows towards one end and typically opens to the west or south-west. This one, however, is oriented north to south, which is itself a quiet anomaly worth noting.

The structure is compact but legible. The gallery runs to 3.5 metres in length and just 0.6 metres in width, making it one of the narrower examples of its kind. It is divided into two sections: a main chamber and, at the southern end, a portico separated from the chamber by a septal-stone, a single upright slab used to partition the interior. The eastern wall is formed by two stones; the western wall by six. The backstone at the northern end is pitched inwards, leaning into the gallery rather than standing vertical. A single roofstone still covers the southern portion of the chamber. To the west of the gallery, a partly exposed stone may represent the remnants of outer-walling, the low kerb or casing that would originally have enclosed a covering mound. Traces of that mound survive on both the eastern and western sides of the gallery, suggesting the monument was once a more substantial earthwork than it appears today. The site was documented by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, which remains a foundational reference for the prehistoric landscape of this part of Kerry.
