Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Knockanuha, Co. Kerry

On a south-westerly ridge in the Shehy Mountains of County Kerry, a roofstone roughly the size of a large dining table has been sitting in place for several thousand years.

It measures 2.35 metres by 2.1 metres and is 0.27 metres thick, resting across two sidestones as it has done since the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. The structure beneath it is a wedge tomb, a type of megalithic burial monument common in the west of Ireland, so called because the chamber narrows from one end to the other in a characteristic wedge shape.

This particular example sits in rough boggy pasture at the head of a valley to the north-west of Carran, and its chamber is aligned WNW to ESE, a orientation typical of the wedge tomb tradition, which generally faces the setting sun. The chamber runs 2.35 metres in length and is 1.6 metres wide at its broader, western end. A single septal-stone, a dividing slab used to partition the interior, closes the WNW end, while a backstone is visible at the narrower ESE end. The north and south sides of the chamber are each formed by a single sidestone, though a gap on the southern side points to a third stone that has since been lost. Projecting sidestones and fallen stones at the WNW end suggest the tomb once had a short portico, an entrance forecourt framed by upright slabs, and single orthostats positioned outside the main chamber on both the north and south sides are thought to be the remnants of an outer enclosing wall. The whole structure occupies an exposed, sloping position that would have made it visible across the valley below, which may well have been part of the intention.
