A memorial stone now resting inside St. Canice's Cathedral in Kilkenny did not begin its life there.
Its original home was a building site on High Street, where it came to light in 1894 during rebuilding work at No. 33, a reminder that urban construction has long had a habit of disturbing the layers beneath.
The stone was unearthed in the area known as the Gardens, and its discovery during the 1894 works placed it firmly in the category of finds that owe their survival to accident rather than design. Once recovered, it was transferred to St. Canice's Cathedral, the medieval cathedral that has served as a repository for a number of Kilkenny's displaced or orphaned stone monuments over the years. The original location on High Street and the present location in the cathedral are recorded as two distinct sites, reflecting the fact that where an object was found and where it now sits can tell quite different stories about how the past surfaces in a living city.
