Mound, Bohaun, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Bohaun in County Mayo, a mound sits in the landscape, classified as an archaeological monument yet almost entirely undocumented in any publicly accessible form.

It has been recorded, given a reference number, and acknowledged to exist, but beyond that the record is essentially silent. For a country whose countryside is densely layered with earthworks, burial mounds, and raised platforms of uncertain origin, this is not entirely unusual, though it gives the site a particular quality of obscurity even by the standards of rural Irish archaeology.

Mounds of this kind in the west of Ireland can represent almost anything across a very wide span of time. A natural esker or glacial deposit might have attracted human activity and been shaped into something more deliberate. Alternatively, the feature could be a burial mound dating from the Bronze Age, a period when raised earthen monuments were constructed over cremated or inhumed remains, sometimes across generations. It might equally be a later medieval feature, perhaps the base of a small motte, the earthen mound on which a timber fortification was raised by Norman settlers in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Without excavation or detailed survey data in the public domain, none of these possibilities can be confirmed or ruled out. Bohaun itself is a quiet townland in Mayo, a county that contains an extraordinary density of prehistoric and early medieval remains, many of them still awaiting proper study.
