Mound, Calliaghstown, Co. Westmeath

Above the Tang River in County Westmeath, on a steep gravel hillock ringed by woodland, there is a mound that has effectively ceased to exist as a visible thing.

No surface remains can be found. Portions of the hill have been quarried away over the years, and the earthwork that was once recorded here survives now only in maps and aerial imagery. That a clearing in the plantation has been maintained around it suggests the site retains some formal recognition, even as the monument itself has largely disappeared into the landscape.

The history of this mound is, in itself, a small puzzle. When the Ordnance Survey produced its six-inch maps in 1838, nothing was marked at this location, only a D-shaped woodland plantation occupying the area. By the time the 1914 edition of the same mapping series was produced, a long narrow mound had been recorded, running roughly thirty-five metres on a northwest to southeast axis and around seven metres across. Whether the mound predated the plantation entirely and was simply overlooked in the earlier survey, or whether it came to prominence only later, is not clear from what survives. What the 1914 map shows is a structure of some scale, sitting on a natural elevated position overlooking the Tang River some thirty metres to the north, the kind of placement that in Irish contexts often signals deliberate, purposeful construction rather than accidental accumulation of earth.

For anyone inclined to visit, the honest expectation is that there is very little to see. The gravel hill itself and the surrounding woodland are present, and the river below offers some sense of the original setting and the sightlines that whoever built here may once have valued. But the mound as a legible monument is gone, consumed by quarrying and time.
