Mount Bellew, Mountbellew Demesne, Co. Galway

The demesne at Mountbellew, in the flat, quiet farmland of east Galway, is one of those places where the landscape itself carries the memory of a vanished household.

A demesne, in the Irish context, typically refers to the enclosed private grounds of a landed estate, often planted with ornamental trees, walled gardens, and designed water features that set the landlord's world apart from the working countryside surrounding it. At Mountbellew, that separation is now largely dissolved, but the outline of the designed landscape persists in the mature tree cover and the particular way the ground falls around the old house site.
