Peyton’s Island, Gubinea, Co. Leitrim

On Glenade Lough in north Leitrim, a small island holds the memory of a stone enclosure that was already in ruins when someone first thought to record it, and had vanished entirely by the time anyone looked again.

That is broadly the story of Peyton's Island, and the gap between those two moments is where the interest lies.

Glenade Lough stretches roughly 1.8 kilometres from northwest to southeast, and the island sits close to its northeastern shore. In the 1940s, the site was described as a circular area about 50 metres in diameter, defined by the remnants of a stone wall some two metres wide and a metre high. Fragments of animal bone and charcoal were noted in the soil, the kind of material that suggests long habitation or repeated use, though without excavation it is impossible to say more. The form of the structure, a roughly circular enclosure defined by a substantial stone wall, is consistent with early medieval ringfort traditions found across Ireland, where such enclosures served as farmsteads or places of local significance. When a field investigator returned in 1993, the wall had disappeared entirely from view. The island was overgrown, the water table was high, and parts of it were under water. Whether the wall has collapsed below the vegetation and soft ground, or was removed at some point in the intervening decades, is not recorded.

What makes the site quietly compelling is precisely this layered absence: a structure described, then lost, on an island that is itself difficult to reach and partly submerged in wet seasons. The bone and charcoal in the soil hint at activity that once mattered enough to leave a trace, even if the wall that once marked out that activity has now been swallowed by water and undergrowth.
