Pit-burial, Ballycasey More, Co. Clare

Burial Sites
In the townland of Ballycasey More, on the outskirts of Shannon in County Clare, the ground holds a pit-burial, one of the quieter and more easily overlooked categories of early funerary practice in Ireland.
Unlike the elaborate passage tombs or the conspicuous standing stones that draw most attention, a pit-burial is precisely what the name suggests: a grave cut directly into the earth, without the architectural ambition of a cairn or a cist. The body, or sometimes a cremated deposit, was placed in the pit and the ground closed over it, leaving little or nothing visible at the surface. That modesty is part of what makes such sites easy to miss, and easy to lose.
