That ditch, or fosse, curving across the neck of the promontory and measuring between four and six metres wide but only around seventy centimetres deep, is almost all that remains to mark this as a deliberate human construction. There is no causeway across it, no trace of a bank on either side, and the interior, some forty-one metres across and a hundred and four metres long, is featureless apart from a path worn through it. For a promontory fort, a class of site in which the natural defences of a headland are reinforced by earthworks across its landward side, this one is unusually spare.

The site sits within a stretch of deeply indented coastline in an area of hilly bogland, overlooked by higher ground to the south and offering long views along the coast in either direction. A freshwater stream runs through a nearby gully, which may have made the headland a practical as well as a defensible choice for whoever used it. It forms part of a cluster of three promontory forts along the same north-facing stretch of coastline, suggesting this corner of Mayo once saw more organised use of its dramatic geography than its present emptiness implies. The site had not been formally recorded before Markus Casey documented it in his 1999 unpublished MA thesis on the coastal promontory forts of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway, and Clare, a survey that brought a number of similarly overlooked sites to light for the first time.
