Promontory fort – inland, Hazelwood Demesne, Co. Sligo

Within the wooded grounds of Hazelwood Demesne on the southern shore of Lough Gill in County Sligo, there survives a structure that quietly defies expectation: an inland promontory fort.

The type is most commonly associated with coastal headlands, where a stretch of cliff or sea does much of the defensive work and a single earthen bank or stone rampart closes off the landward side. Finding one set into an inland landscape is considerably rarer, and it raises questions that the site itself does not easily answer.

Promontory forts as a class belong broadly to the Iron Age, though many were used or modified across long periods, and the term describes a form rather than a precise moment in time. The principle is straightforward: a natural spur of land, bounded on several sides by steep slopes, a river bend, or in coastal cases a sheer drop to water, is converted into an enclosure by cutting a ditch or raising a bank across its accessible neck. At Hazelwood, the demesne setting adds another layer of history; the lands were developed as a designed landscape, most likely in the eighteenth century, meaning that the fort has sat within a cultivated and planted estate for several hundred years, its earthworks persisting beneath or alongside the ornamental woodlands that now surround it.

Hazelwood Demesne itself is accessible to the public as part of Lough Gill's recreational trail network, and the combination of lakeside scenery and layered archaeology makes it an interesting place to walk slowly rather than pass through quickly. The fort's earthworks are the kind of feature that rewards attention to ground level, where subtle changes in slope and bank reveal themselves to anyone looking beyond the tree line.
