On the 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a small hachured mark sits quietly in the townland of Cloonnamaskry in County Galway.
Hachuring, the fine radiating lines cartographers used to suggest slopes or depressions in the landscape, indicated something worth noting, a hollow of some kind. When someone went out to look in 1984, they found a semicircular hollow in the ground, most likely the remains of a disused sand pit. It is a modest feature, the kind that is easy to walk past without a second thought, and that is rather the point.
