Sometimes the most revealing thing about a place is the gap between what people feared they had found and what was actually there.
At Raruddy in County Galway, a report of graves was alarming enough to prompt a formal inspection in 1981. What investigators found instead were quarry depressions, hollows left in a natural ridge by stone extraction, almost certainly carried out within the last few centuries.
