Ringforts

Rathvallygoney Fort, Ballinard, Co. Tipperary

Sitting quietly in a Tipperary pasture, this roughly circular enclosure holds its shape with more stubbornness than the landscape around it deserves credit for.

The earthwork measures approximately 39 metres across, and what was once a substantial bank, complete with an outer fosse and a second outer bank, has been worn down over centuries into a steep scarp on one side. That scarp still rises to around 4.3 metres on its outer face, which is considerable for something so thoroughly absorbed into working farmland. An entrance gap of roughly 3.5 metres opens to the east-south-east, the kind of orientation common to ringforts across Ireland, where the enclosing bank and ditch of a rath, as these monuments are technically known, once defined a farmstead of the early medieval period.

What makes the site's biography legible is the gap between two Ordnance Survey maps. The 1840 six-inch edition shows the monument still largely intact, with a wide fosse, that is a defensive ditch, wrapping around the outside, and a second outer bank beyond that. By the time the 1904 edition was surveyed, the outer bank had been quietly absorbed into a field boundary, pressed into agricultural service rather than left to its own purposes. The surrounding field boundaries have since been removed almost entirely, all except one length abutting the south-east quadrant. Both maps also record a mound sitting inside the enclosure, set slightly off-centre to the north, a feature that survives as a separate monument. Whether the mound predates the ringfort, is contemporaneous with it, or was raised later is not recorded here, but its presence adds a second layer of interest to what might otherwise read as a straightforward, if well-preserved, earthwork.
