This is a ring-ditch, a type of monument defined by a circular fosse, or ditch, that typically survives as the buried remnant of a prehistoric enclosure, possibly surrounding a burial or ritual site. Centuries of tillage have long since levelled whatever once stood or was interred within it, but the ditch beneath the soil still holds moisture and nutrients differently from the surrounding earth, causing the crops above it to grow at a slightly altered rate and colour, revealing the outline of the monument as a cropmark.

The site was identified not through ground excavation or field survey but through satellite imagery, spotted and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère. That kind of discovery has become increasingly common as high-resolution aerial and satellite photography makes it possible to recognise archaeological features that leave no surface trace whatsoever. What makes the Ballynalina example particularly interesting is its context: a second ring-ditch sits approximately seventy metres to the north-west, and two further enclosures lie between two hundred and twenty and two hundred and sixty metres to the south-east. The clustering of such monuments is rarely accidental. In many parts of Ireland, ring-ditches and related enclosures tend to accumulate in landscapes that held significance across long spans of prehistoric activity, each monument drawing on, or responding to, what was already there.
