Ring-ditch, Clogh, Co. Kilkenny

In a field near the Clogh River in County Kilkenny, there is a circular feature that is entirely invisible to anyone walking past it.

No earthwork survives above ground, no stones mark the perimeter, and there is nothing to catch the eye at ground level. The site reveals itself only from above, as a cropmark, the kind of ghostly impression that appears in aerial or satellite imagery when buried ditches cause the vegetation above them to grow at a slightly different rate, producing faint rings or lines that only become legible from altitude.

What the imagery shows is a ring-ditch roughly sixteen metres in diameter, defined by a fosse, which is simply an encircling ditch, cut into the earth. Ring-ditches of this kind are found across Ireland and are generally interpreted as the ploughed-down or silted-up remains of Bronze Age burial monuments, the ditches that once surrounded low mounds or cairns long since lost to centuries of agriculture. The Clogh example sits approximately thirty metres from the Clogh River and was identified by Jean-Charles Caillère, who spotted it on both Apple Maps and Google Earth satellite imagery captured in August 2022. The proximity to water is not unusual for such sites; prehistoric communities frequently placed funerary monuments in river landscapes, and the broad, flat ground near watercourses tends to preserve cropmark evidence well, since the soil disturbance of the original ditch remains detectable in the subsoil long after the monument itself has vanished.
